Reaction Steps

Under N2, a mixture of ethyl 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (2.5 g, 15 mmol) 1-1, and Cs2CO3 (5.0 g, 15 mmol) in DMF (50 ml) was stirred at room temperature. After 15 min, diphenylmethyl bromide 1-2 (4.0 g, 16 mmol) was added and then heated at 60° C. After 1 h, saturated Na2CO3 was added and the mixture extracted with EtOAc (3×). The combined extracts were washed with H2O, dried, filtered and concentrated to dryness to yield 1-3.
