Procedure

7-4 (0.572 g, 1.9 mmol) was dissolved in ether (10 ml). The solution was cooled in ice and phosphorus tribromide (0.204 g, 0.75 mmol) was added. After 1/2 hr. the reaction was diluted with methanol (2 ml) and water (5 ml). The ether layer was separated, washed with sodium bicarbonate and water, dried and filtered. Concentration of the filtrate in vacuo gave 7-5 as a white solid. mp: 70°-73° C.
