Reaction Steps

A mixture of 0.13 g of trans-6-cyano-2,2-bisfluoromethyl-3,4-dihydro-4-(1,2-dihydro-2-oxo-1-pyridyl)-2H-1-benzopyran-3-ol, 0.13 g of sodium hydroxide on support and 2 ml of dioxane was refluxed for 45 minutes. Water was added thereto and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. After the organic layer was washed with water and dried, the solvent was distilled off. The resultant residue was recrystallized from ethyl acetate to obtain 6-cyano-2,2-bisfluoromethyl-4-(1,2-dihydro-2-oxo-1-pyridyl)-2H-1-benzopyran represented by the following formula having melting point of 174°-175° C.
