A solution of Ethyl N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-3-(5-nitro-2-thienyl)-DL-alaninate (4.92 g, 14.3 mmol) in ethanol (75 ml) was hydrogenated over 10% palladium/Charcoal (2.0 g) at 25 psi for 6 hours using a Parr hydrogenation apparatus. The mixture was filtered through a pad of celite. The solvent was removed at reduced pressure to give Ethyl N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-3-(5-amino-2-thienyl)-DL-alaninate (4.22 g, 94%) as a dark yellow solid. Melting point=132° C.
