1-Chloro-4-hydroxythioxanthone as prepared in Example 1 (13.1 g) and pyridine (1O g) was stirred in acetone (50 ml) at 50°. Acetyl chloride (4.3 g) was added over 0.25 h and the mixture stirred and heated under reflux for a further hour. The mixture was cooled to 20° and quenched with water (150 ml). The resulting solution was extracted with chloroform (50 ml), separated and the organic phase washed twice with water. The organic phase was evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure and the residue crystallised from methanol with a carbon treatment to afford the title compound, 4.1 g (27.0%) as a pale yellow solid of mp 141°-42°.
