A mixture of 19.7 g (0.053 mol) of the above benzoic acid, 600 ml of trifluoroacetic acid, and 300 ml of trifluoroacetic anhydride was stirred at 50° C. for four hours, treated with an additional 70 ml of trifluoroacetic anhydride, and stirred at 50° C. for 20 hours. The reaction mixture was poured into 9 l of H2O and the precipitate that accumulated was collected and dried to give 16.4 g of 1-chloro-5,8-dimethoxy-4-nitro-9H-thioxanthen-9-one, mp 222°-228° C.
