Reaction Steps
To a suspension of 55.8 g of 1,2-dihydro-6-methyl-2-oxo-5-[4-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)phenyl]-3-pyridine carbonitrile in 500 ml of 10% aqueous methanol is added concentrated hydrochloric acid with stirring to a pH of 2. After cooling at 0° C. overnight, the solid is collected, washed with cold methanol followed by ether, and dried in vacuo at 120° for two hours to give 62.6 g of the monohydrochloride as light beige powder, mp 322°-326° C., dec.
