Procedure

To a solution of 0.588 g of (RS)-1-(2,2-diethoxyethyl)-3-((4-methoxycarbonylphenyl)aminocarbonylmethyl)-3-(N'-(4-methylphenyl)ureido)indolin-2-one in 30 ml of methanol was added 5 ml of an aqueous solution of 0.20 g of potassium hydroxide (85%) at room temperature. The mixture was stirred for 1 day, followed by concentration. The concentrate was diluted with water, and washed with chloroform. The aqueous layer was adjusted to pH 2 with 2N hydrochloric acid and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated. The resulting crude product was purified by silica gel column chromatography (hexane/ethyl acetate 1/1) to give 0.56 g (98%) of the title compound.
