To a solution of 8.0 g (0.025 mol) of trans-3,4-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-6-nitro-4-(2-oxopyrrolidin-1-yl)-2H-1-benzopyran-3-ol (U.S. Pat. No. 4,647,670) in 800 mL of ethanol is added 2.8 g of 10% Pd/C, and the reaction mixture is stirred under a hydrogen atmosphere for 18 h. The reaction mixture is filtered, evaporated, and the resulting oil subjected to chromatography on silica gel utilizing 4% methanol in dichloromethane as eluent. The eluates are analyzed by thin layer chromatography, and the appropriate fractions are combined and evaporated to afford the title compound.
