To a mixture of 29.3 g of N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-2-(acetylthio)acetamide and 240 ml of ethanol was added dropwise 27 ml of a 30% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution at 0° C. in an argon atmosphere. After stirring for 30 minutes, 20.0 g of 1-bromo-6-chlorohexane was added thereto, followed by stirring at room temperature for 4 hours. To the reaction mixture was added 50 ml of water to yield 36.0 g of N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-2-(6-chlorohexylthio)acetamide as colorless needle crystals having a melting point (m.p.) of 86.5° to 87.5° C.
