To an ice-cooled solution of 3-propylpyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione (3.00 g) in H2O (100 ml) was added dropwise bromine (1.56 g) until the solution was colored pale yellow. An ice cold saturated NaHCO3 solution was added carefully to the reaction mixture. The alkalized solution was refluxed for 12 hours. After removal of the solvent, the residue was recrystallized from ethanol to give 5-hydroxy-3-propylpyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione (2.32 g, 70% yield).
