Reaction Conditions

Temperature-78 °C

Reaction Steps

1.3 M s-BuLi in cyclohexane (41 mL, 0.053 mol) was added dropwise to a solution of the above amide (5 g, 0.024 mol) and TMEDA (4 ml, 0.027 mol) in THF, cooled to -78° C. under nitrogen. After 30 min a solution of hexachloroethane (6.4 g, 0.027 mol) in THF was added. After 0.5 h at -78° C. the reaction mixture was warmed to -30° C. and poured into dilute aq NaHCO3 and extracted with ether. The ether extract was washed with water and brine, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated. The resulting solid was recrystallized from cyclohexane to give 5 g of 2-chloro-4-t-butyl-N-ethylbenzamide, a white solid.
