Procedure
A solution of 7-acetoxy-4,8-dimethyl-3-phthalimidomethylcoumarin (15.9 g, 40.6 mol) was stirred in methanol (2000 mL) while concentrated H2SO4 (75 mL) was added dropwise. The resulting mixture was refluxed for 3 hours, allowed to cool to room temperature, then chilled in an ice water bath. The precipitate was collected in a Buchner funnel and rinsed with ice cold methanol to give 7-hydroxy-4,8-dimethyl-3-phthalimidomethylcoumarin, a white solid (12.1 g, 85.6%). 1H NMR (CD3OD): δ 7.87-7.78 (m, 4H), 7.55 (d, J=8.7 Hz, 1H), 6.84 (d, J=8.8 Hz, 1H), 2.61 (s, 3H), 2.23 (s, 3H), the methylene peak is presumably obscured by solvent hydroxy peak at 4.88.
