A mixture of ethyl 1-methyl-4-(2-methylphenyl)-2-oxo-1,2,7,8-tetrahydro-6H-cyclopenta[g]quinoline-3-carboxylate (2.0 g), potassium hydroxide (1.55 g) and 80% ethanol (20 ml) was stirred at 80° C. for 20 minutes. The mixture was diluted with water and acidified with 2N NCl to give crystals of 1-methyl-4-(2-methylphenyl) -2-oxo-1,2,7,8-tetrahydro-6H-cyclopenta[g]quinoline-3-carboxylic acid (1.85 g, 99.6%).
