To a suspension of 7-nitro-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-1-acetic acid (2.75 g, 11.5 mmol) in methanol (25 ml) at 0° C. was added dropwise thionyl chloride (3.6 ml, 41 mmol). After addition was complete, the reaction mixture was heated at reflux for 0.33 h. After cooling slightly, ether (50 ml) was added and the reaction mixture was cooled to 0° C. The precipitate was collected to give the title compound as a light yellow solid (3.09 g, 93%), m.p. 211-2° C.
