100 ml of H2O and 0.77 g (0.019 mol) of 76% NaOH were introduced into a 250 ml beaker equipped with a magnetic stirrer. Stirring was commenced and upon dissolution of the caustic, 11.9 g (0.042 mol) of Emersol 6313 oleic acid (75%) were added thereto. Stirring was continued until a clear gel containing some white precipitate was formed. This material was allowed to stand for one hour and then an additional 100 ml of H2O was added. In this instance, 34.82% of the oleic acid was reacted to form sodium oleate. The emulsion concentrate contained 4.58 percent by weight solids as follows:
