Procedure
To a stirred solution of 0.25 g of 4-nitrobenzyl 6-ethyl-7-oxo-3-acetylthio-4-thia-1-azabicyclo[3,2,0]hept-2-ene 2-carboxylate in 4 ml of dioxan and 0.5 ml of water was added, in one batch, 0.046 g of imidazole. After 10 minutes, the solution was diluted with 10 ml of 1M citric acid and extracted twice with dichloromethane. The combined organic extracts were washed with water, dried over magnesium sulphate, and evaporated in vacuo to give the title compound in a quantitative yield.
