To a solution of ethyl 4-[4-(4-trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenoxy]-3-oxopentanoate (450 mg) in ethanol (5 ml) is added NaBH4 (150 mg) at 0°. The resulting mixture is then stirred at 0° for about 10 minutes. The mixture is diluted with CH2Cl2, washed with saturated NaCl solution, dried and evaporated to dryness to give ethyl 4-[4-(4-trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenoxy]-3-hydroxypentanoate, in quantitative yield, MS m/e 398 (M+).
