9.2 ml of 18 N sulfuric acid were added to a refluxing solution of 4.62 g of the product of Step A in 90 ml of dioxane and the mixture was refluxed for 15 minutes and was then cooled. The mixture was poured into iced water and was extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase was washed with aqueous sodium chloride solution, dried and evaporated to dryness. The residue was chromatographed over silica gel and was eluted with a 2-8-1 benzene-ethyl acetate-triethylamine mixture and then a 95-5-1 chloroform-methanol-triethylamine mixture to obtain 3.3 g of 7-methylamino-9-phenyl-6,7-dihydro [5H] benzocycloheptene.
