Reaction Steps

A mixture of 2.47 g of 7-methylamino-9-phenyl-6,7-dihydro [5H] benzocycloheptene, 130 ml of ethanol, and 3.67 g of palladized carbon [10% pd(OH)2 ] was maintained under a hydrogen atmosphere until absorption ceased and the mixture was filtered. The filtrate was evaporated to dryness and the residue was chromatographed over silica gel. Elution with a 4-6-1 benzene-ethyl acetate-triethylamine mixture yielded 1.82 g of 7-methylamino-5-phenyl-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro [5H] benzocycloheptene.
