A solution of 3-cyano-4-(4-tolyl)pyridine (485 mg, 2.66 mmol), N-bromosuccinimide (929 mg, 5.22 mmol), and dibenzoylperoxide (64 mg, 0.266 mmol) in CCl4 (15 mL) was heated to reflux for 6 h. The mixture was cooled and water (50 mL) and CH2Cl2 (30 mL) were added. The organic layer was dried (MgSO4) and purified by flash chromatography (10% EtOAc/hexanes). The product is not kept in concentrated form for more than 5 minutes and stored only in CH2Cl2 at 0° C. to minimize polymerization.
