10.9 g of N,N'-carbonyldiimidazole were added to a solution of 25.0 g of (2S,4S)-4-(4-methoxybenzylthio)-1-(4-nitrobenzyloxycarbonyl)-2-pyrrolidinecarboxylic acid in 200 ml of anhydrous acetonitrile, and the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. At the end of this time, a solution of 10.9 g of 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazine in 50 ml of anhydrous acetonitrile was added to the mixture, which was then stirred at room temperature for 45 minutes. The reaction mixture was then concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure, and the resulting residue was diluted with 800 ml of ethyl acetate and then washed, three times with 200 ml of water, and then once with 150 ml of an aqueous solution of sodium chloride.
