To thionyl chloride (400 ml, 5.11 mol) was added (2S,4S)-6-fluoro-2',5'-dioxospiro[chroman-4,4'-imidazolidine]-2-carboxylic acid (20.0 g, 67.1 mmol). After refluxing the mixture for 18 hours, the resulting reaction mixture was dried in vacuo to dryness to give the desired compound (20.0 g, 100%).
