To 2-Methylhypoxanthine (1.3 g, 8.6 mmol) and P2S5 (5 g) was added pyridine (50 mL). The mixture was refluxed for 4 h. The pyridine was distilled away and NaOH (50 mL) was added to the residue. A brown precipitate was filtered away. The precipitate was dried in a vacuum oven at 80° C. for 24 h to give the desired product (.77 g, 46.3%) as a light brown solid. mp>300° C. DCI/MC (M+1)=167. (300 MHz) 1H-nmr (DMSO-d6)δ: 8.3 (s, 1H), 2.45 (s, 3H).
