Reaction Steps

220 mg of N-benzyl-9-benzyl-1-phenylcarbazole-3,4-dicarboximide was dissolved in 30 ml of benzene. Thereto was added 240 mg of anhydrous aluminum chloride. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours, washed with water and an aqueous saturated sodium chloride solution in this order, and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure. The residue was recrystallized from n-propanol to obtain 140 mg (yield: 78%) of N-benzyl-1-phenylcarbazole-3,4-dicarboximide as yellow crystals.
