Procedure

The potassium salt (22.5 g) was dissolved in a mixture of 200 mL H2O and 100 mL of ethanol. To this solution was added 1N NaOH (53 mL). The reaction was allowed to stir for 3 hours. Ethanol was then removed in vacuo, and the aqueous acidified to pH=1.5 with 5N HCl. This solution was extratced with 10% ethanol/ethyl acetate (3×200 mL). The organic was dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated in vacuo to give 8.65 g (46% for two steps) of (R)-[(2-sulfobenzoyl)amino-1H-imidazol-1-yl]-octanoic acid as a white solid. MS.
