Reaction Steps
To a solution of 3.30 g of N-methyl-2,2-diphenyl-1,3-benzodioxole-5-carboxamide in 20 ml of tetrahydrofuran, cooled to -78° C., were added 12.5 ml of a 1.6M solution of n-butyllithium in hexane. The solution was stirred for 1 hour, the temperature being allowed to warm up to 20° C. Then, 1.37 g of methyl iodide were added, and stirring was continued for 1 hour. After the addition of 20 ml saturated ammonium chloride solution, the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed successively with 2N potassium hydrogensulfate solution, saturated potassium bicarbonate solution and brine, and dried over magnesium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated in vacuo, and the solid residue was crystallized from ethanol to give 15.6 g of N, 4-dimethyl-2,2-diphenyl-1,3-benzodioxole-5-carboxamide, m.p. 178°-180° C.
