Procedure

0.5 g (1.86 mmol) of 2-amino-6-fluoro-4-phosphonomethyl-hex-3-enoic acid ethyl ester are heated under reflux in 4 ml of water for 17 hours. The reaction mixture is concentrated by evaporation and separated with water on a strongly acidic ion-exchanger (Dowex 50W×8; It⊕ form). 2-amino-6-fluoro-4-phosphonomethyl-hex-3-enoic acid having a melting point of 160°-162° C. (decomp.) is obtained.
