3-Methylbenzo[b]thiophene-2-carboxaldehyde (4.2 g, 23.8 mmol) was dissolved in dry toluene (100 ml) and treated with (formylmethylene)triphenylphosphorane (7.35 g, 24.2 mmol). The reaction mixture was heated to 80° C. for 10 hours, allowed to cool and the residue was washed with 200 ml of hexane/Et2O 1/1 and then triturated with isopropyl ether to give pure title compound (2.5 g, 12.38 mmol, yield 52.0%), m.p.=90-92+ C.
