Reaction Steps
A solution of potassium hydroxide (25.9 g, 0.463 mol) in water (60 ml) was added to a stirred solution of 2-(4-methoxyphenylsulfanyl)phenylacetonitrile (31.2 g, 0.119 mol) in ethanol (185 g) and the mixture was refluxed for 7 h. Then the mixture was evaporated to dryness, the residue was dissolved in water (100 ml), the solution was filtered with charcoal to give a clear solution which was acidified to pH 1 with hydrochloric acid under cooling. The separated oil slowly provided a crystalline material which was filtered off and washed with water to neutral reaction of the washings. This procedure yielded 27.3 g (84.3%) of the required acid, m.p. 102-105° C.
