To a solution of 0.5 g (1.7 mmol) of 3B in 10 mL of toluene was added 4.0 mL of 10% trimethylamine/toluene solution and the mixture stirred at room temperature for 20 min. To the resulting mixture was added 0.36 g (20 mmol) of 3-trifluoromethyl-4-fluorophenol and the mixture stirred overnight. The reaction mixture was diluted with H2O and transferred to a separatory funnel and extracted with 40 mL of methylene chloride. The organic layer was washed sequentially with 5% NaHCO3 solution and water, dried and evaporated to yield 0.52 g (70.3%) of 2-(3-trifluoromethyl-4-fluorophenoxy)-4-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-5-chloropyrimidine (m.p. 90-92)
