Reaction Steps

Isopropyl 5-methyl-2-(2′-fluoro-6′-trifluoromethylanilino)phenylacetate (2.9 g, 8.4 mmol) is dissolved in methanesulfonic acid (25 ml) and stirred at room temperature for 8 hours. The reaction mixture is slowly added to 200 ml of ice in a beaker. After the ice has melted, the solution is stirred to produce a white solid which is isolated by filtration. The solid is flash chromatographed on silica-gel using 35% EtOAc as an eluant to give 5-methyl-2-(2′-fluoro-6′-trifluoromethylanilino)phenylacetic acid as a white solid, m.p. 155-156°.
