Procedure
A mixture of 5.0 g, 0.105 mol) of 2-bromo-1-[4-(2-bromo-ethyl)-phenyl]-2-methyl-propan-1-one, 0.60 g (0.015 mol) of sodium hydroxide, 100 ml of ethanol and 50 ml of 1,2-dimethoxyethane is stirred at room temperature overnight. The reaction mixture is concentrated and the crude product is dissolved in ethyl acetate. The solution is washed with distilled water, dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated to give 3.4 g of 1-[4-(2-bromoethyl)phenyl]-2-hydroxy-2-methylpropan-1-one.
