Aqueous 5N NaOH (4 ml, 20.00 mmol) was added to a stirred solution of methyl 3-methyl-1H-indazole-5-carboxylate (1.02 g, 5.36 mmol) in MeOH (10 ml) and the mixture was stirred at 70° C. for 6 h. The mixture was cooled, and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The mixture was diluted with H2O, and aqueous 5N HCl (4 ml) was added to the mixture with stirring, the resulted precipitate was filtered and dried over at 50° C. overnight to give intended compound as a brown solid.
