Reaction Steps
cis,trans-Muconic acid (119 mg, 0.838 mmol) is dissolved in ethyl ether (10 mL) at room temperature and a crystal of iodine (7.2 mg, 0.028 mmol) is added. The reaction mixture is allowed to stir at room temperature for 24 hour. The precipitate is filtered, washed with ice-cold acetonitrile and dried under reduced pressure to yield 100 mg of trans,trans-muconic acid, a 84 percent yield.
