To (2-chloro-4-morpholin-4-yl-thieno[3,2-d]pyrimidin-6-yl)-methanol (1.42 g) in toluene (14 ml) warmed to 40° C. was added phosphorous tribromide (0.16 ml) and the mixture was then heated to 100° C. After heating for 6 hours the reaction mixture was cooled, diluted with chloroform, washed with brine, dried (MgSO4) and the solvent removed in vacuo to yield 6-bromomethyl-2-chloro-4-morpholin-4-yl-thieno[3,2-d]pyrimidine (1.40 g).
