A stirred solution of 1-(4-methoxybenzyl)-3-methyl-1H-indole-6-carbonyl chloride [2.8 g, Reference Example 42(b)] in chloroform (90 ml) at 0° C. was treated with N,O-dimethylhydroxylamine hydrochloride (0.982 g) and pyridine (1.55 ml). The solution was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour then evaporated. The residue was partitioned between dichloromethane (100 ml) and brine (50 ml). The organic layer was dried over sodium sulphate then evaporated. The residue was subjected to flash chromatography on silica eluting with a mixture of ethyl acetate and hexane (1:2, v/v) to yield the title compound (2.8 g).
