Reaction Steps

A mixture of 1-benzyl-3,3-di-n-butyl-4-hydroxypiperidine (0.9 g, 2.97 mmole) and 20% palladium hydroxide (0.2 g) in methanol (20 ml) was stirred at ambient temperature in hydrogen atmosphere (1 atm.) for 8 hr. Catalyst was filtered off, washed with methanol, filtrate was concentrated to dryness to give 3,3-di-n-butyl-4-hydroxypiperidine as oil. Yield 0.5 g (85%), C14H27NO, m/z 214 (M+1).
