Procedure
A mixture of 2-(4-chlorobenzoyl)-1-(phenylsulfonyl)indole (step 1, 334 mg, 0.84 mmol) and 2N sodium hydroxide (1.5 ml, 2.78 mmol) in ethanol (5 ml) was heated at reflux temperature for 15 min. The mixture was concentrated and the residue was diluted with ethyl acetate (100 ml). The organic layer was washed with water and dried (MgSO4), and concentrated to afford 211 mg (98.2%) of the title compound as yellow solids.
