To a solution of 4-bromo-N-[2-(3-methoxyphenyl)ethyl]benzamide (5.00 g, 15.0 mmol) in CHCl3 (30 ml) was added phosphorous pentachloride (5.30 g, 25.0 mmol) and the mixture stirred for 18 hr at rt under N2. Hexane was added to the mixture and the liquid was then decanted off. EtOH (15 ml) was added to the residue and the mixture was triturated with diethyl ether to give 3.65 g (69% yield) of off-white solid.
