Sodium borohydride (0.720 g, 19.0 mmol) was added in small portions to a solution of 1-(4-bromophenyl)-6-methoxy-3,4-dihydroisoquinoline, hydrochloride (3.62 g, 10.2 mmol) in MeOH (30 ml) at 0° C. The reaction mixture was stirred for 30 min, warmed to rt, and stirred at rt for 1 hr, then quenched by the dropwise addition of H2O (10 ml). Acetic acid (10 drops) was added with stirring, and the resulting mixture was basified to pH 10 with 1N NaOH and extracted with EtOAc (3×25 ml). The combined extracts were washed with 1N NaOH followed by saturated NaCl solution, dried over Na2SO4, and concentrated in vacuo to give 3.24 g (100% yield) of white solid.
