Reaction Steps

To a solution of ethyl 2-mercapto-1-[[2′-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)biphenyl-4-yl]methyl]benzimidazole-7-carboxylate (0.91 g) in ethanol (13 ml) containing 1H-NaOH (4 ml) was added ethyl iodide (0.34 g), and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 4 hours. The reaction mixture was adjusted to pH 4 with dilute hydrochloric acid to give crystals. The crystals were collected by filtration and purified by column chromatography on silica gel. Recrystallization from ethyl acetate gave colorless prisms (0.55 g, 57%), m.p. 153-154° C. (decomp.).
