Reaction Steps

To a solution of methyl 2-ethoxy-1-[(2′-methoxycarbonyl-biphenyl-4-yl)methyl]benzimidazole-7-carboxylate (0.7 g) in methanol (10 ml) was added 1N NaOH (5 ml) and the mixture was stirred at 80° C. for 3 hours. After evaporation of the methanol, the aqueous residue was neutralized with 1N hydrochloric acid to give crystals. The crystals were recrystallized from methanol-chloroform to afford colorless crystals (0.54 g, 83%), m.p. 213-215° C.
