12.7 g (50 mmol) of methyl 3,3-diphenyl-2,3-epoxypropionate were dissolved in 50 ml of diethyl ether, 6.6 g (50 mmol) of methyl 3-hydroxy-2,2-dimethylpropionate and 1 ml of BF3.Et2O were added, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 18 h. The solvent was evaporated off, and the oily residue was reacted without further purification and characterization.
