To a solution of ethyl(1RS,2RS,3SR)-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-(3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl)indane-2-carboxylate (0.10 g, 0.2 mmol) in EtOH (5 ml) was added a solution of sodium hydroxide (0.10 g, 2.5 mmol) in H2O (2 ml). The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. The mixture was acidified, and the solid which formed was collected by filtration and dried under reduced pressure to afford the title compound as a tan solid (0.04 g, 86%).
