Procedure

To a solution of 7-tert-butyl-2,3-dihydro-3,3-dimethyl-5-benzo-[b]furancarboxamide oxime (1.05 g, 4.0 mmol) in 20 mL of pyridine is added acetyl chloride (0.43 mL, 6.0 mmol). The reaction mixture is heated at 95 ° C. for 22 h and cooled to room temperature. Pyridine is removed in vacuo at 50 ° C.; the residue is partitioned between water and ethyl acetate. The organic layer is washed with water and with brine, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo to give 1.33 g of the crude product. Purification by flash column chromatography on silica gel (10% ethyl acetate-hexane) produces about 0.60 g (52%) of the title compound as a colorless solid: mp 81°-82° C.
