A mixture of methyl 2-amino-3-[4-[2-[N-(2-benzoxazolyl)-N-methylamino]ethoxy]phenyl]propanoate (5.00 g), acetic acid (4.4 mL) and chloroform (1.60 mL) was treated dropwise with isoamyl nitrite (3.2 mL). The mixture was heated at reflux for 1.5 hrs, cooled, diluted with chloroform (200 mL) and washed successively with dilute hydrochloric acid (200 mL), water (2×200 mL) and brine (200 mL). The chloroform solution was dried over MgSO4, evaporated and the residue chromatographed on silica gel using 3% ethyl acetate in dichloromethane as eluent to afford the title compound, a gum.
