The product of example 1, N2,3-bis(benzyloxy)-N5-(4-fluorobenzyl)-4-(hydroxymethyl)pyridine-2,5-dicarboxamide, (0.170 g, 0.330 mmol, 1 eq) and 10% Pd/C catalyst (5 mg) were stirred in 4.0 mL of methanol under an atmosphere of hydrogen for 1 hour. The catalyst was filtered and the reaction mixture was concentrated under vacuum yielding 0.100 g of N5-(4-fluorobenzyl)-N2,3-dihydroxy-4-(hydroxymethyl)pyridine-2,5-dicarboxamide (90% yield) as a white solid; 1H-NMR (400 MHz, MeOD): δ=8.17 (s, 1H), 7.44 (m, 2H), 7.09 (t, 2H), 4.78 (s, 2H), 4.58 (s, 2H); MS-ESI m/z 336 [MH]+.
