1.5 equivalents of sodium methoxide (30% solution in methanol) were added to 20.6 g of thiourea in 900 ml of absolute ethanol. 91 g of 2-(4-methoxy-3,5-dimethyl-benzoylamino)-malonic acid diethyl ester were added in small portions, and then the mixture was stirred at 60° C. for 3 h. Then the mixture was cooled to room temperature, and the precipitate was filtered off with suction, washed with 100 ml ethanol and 100 ml diethyl ether and dried in vacuo. 78.2 g of the crude title compound were obtained.
