A mixture of methyl 2-chloro-4-fluoro-α-[1-(methylamino)ethylidene]-β-oxobenzenepropanoate (i.e. the product of Step B) (15.91 g, 55.82 mmol) and methylhydrazine (3 mL, 56 mmol) in diethyl ether (150 mL) was stirred at room temperature for 48 h. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure to provide the title compound as a colorless oil (15 g).
